Most of the confusion on timber quality tends to revolve around the number and size of knots etc. We have included some of the information to guide you through this process. It is important to note that most of the coniferous softwoods used for decking and cladding will have knots e.g decking, cladding, flooring. What is very important is the size and the need for them to be firm/tight/ solid and not loose, if the presence of knots is an issue the other alternative will be to apply solid / opaque finishes etc or utilise shorter lengths. All our bulk or wholesale softwood timber is graded into two main use applications i.e. Visual Grade for appearance purposes only used for cladding facades/linings/weatherboard, decking, flooring and mouldings, and according to Stress Grade or Structural Grade selected for load-bearing applications, joists, support beams, carcassing.

Our Visual Timber Quality is based around the Nordic Grading Rules -Nordiskt trä – 1994 (The Blue Book) and our own grading rules classified into, e.g. AB, BC, C. In visual Grading a number of appearance or visual characteristics, features are taken into consideration, e.g. Knots, splits, Checks, Wane, pitch or resin pockets, insect damage, fungal attack, discolouration, twist, cupping (distortion) etc. Please see our standard softwood grading rules are given on below.
We can Grade to other visual specifications on request; We can offer to grade to customers specifications if required. It is always important to note that European Mills or Graders do not normally Grade to grades or standards given in BS1186-3:1990 section 4 Class CHS, 1, 2, 3 or BS8605, BS EN 942: e.g. J2, J5, J10, J30,J40,J50 Timber in joinery – General classification of joinery quality etc. It is essential to differentiate the Grading rules to such as GOST Russian Standard 26002-83 – U/S (I-III) UNSORTED, S/F (I-IV) SAWFALLING, FOURTHS (IV TH) Vth VIth Which we can also supply if required on request. A general overview of our grading rules compared to the GOST grading rules is given below for comparison:
